What happens when a domain expires
Expiry date passes. Nothing is free yet. Most registrars keep the name working for a while and let the owner renew late.
Auto-renew grace, ~0–45 days. The owner can still renew at the normal price. Most expired domains are simply renewed here and never become available.
Redemption, ~30 days. The name is switched off but the owner can still recover it, usually for a large restore fee. It is not obtainable by anyone else during this window.
Pending delete, 5 days. Locked. No one can register it, and its drop time is now fixed and public.
Drop. It returns to the pool. Good names are caught within seconds by backorder services, which is why a backorder placed in advance beats refreshing a search box.
